Sad news about the loss of a great industry servant reached us last month from Australia, via David Segreto who runs DFS Group’s Auckland Airport operation.

“Brian Hayward [who died after a long illness with cancer] was a great family friend but also a great friend of the duty free industry in Australasia,” writes David.

“My family first met him not long after he arrived in Australia from the UK in 1969. A die-hard Leeds United supporter, he worked in the liquor industry throughout his career working with a few companies selling great brands such as Johnnie Walker & Jim Beam.

“In his later years he used his entrepreneurial spirit to be the agent for brands such as Ursus vodka plus many more. Both he and his wife Carol are both very well know to The Nuance Group in Australia where he worked tirelessly in-store, especially in Brisbane Airport with Neil Johnson, to promote his brands.

“Brian was one who was always very supportive and would always be there to offer some words of wisdom. He was a great character of our industry and will be missed by many. Thank you Brian for touching my life in a special way.”

Brian is survived by his wife Carol, son Andrew & daughter Lorraine.
