If you read just one piece of writing this year, I urge you to make it this one, called simply ‘Journey’s End’. It’s a farewell, a lament and an anguished tribute to a four year-old boy, Edward (Ned) Wheatley, written by his father Andy (a good friend of Scorpio Distributors Chairman Stuart McGuire). They are the bravest, most beautiful, saddest words you will ever read.

Ned lost his brave battle for life on 28 July, following complications from open heart surgery.

Diagnosed at 24 weeks old with a rare congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Ned and his family had been supported by a wonderful charity called Little Hearts Matter. His parents Andy and Clare are asking people to send a donation to the charity in Ned’s memory. After you read these words, I think you might. [http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=EdwardWheatley]

Ned’s funeral is today, 9 August.
